You are now approaching Gulf Harbor, one of the largest marinas in New Zealand. A ferry service operates in the harbor that transports passengers to and from down town Auckland. The area boasts one of the countries top golf courses and has always been regarded as a retreat for the affluent citizens of Auckland. This site was originally called Hobs Bay but its name was changed to Gulf Harbor after it was sold off by wealthy land owners. The end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula is just 4 km from the Gulf Harbour. Whangaparaoa is a Maori word that means “bay of whales.”
