You are approaching Huia where there are two spectacular dams to visit, the Upper Huia, completed in 1929, and the Lower Huia, built in 1970. Both dams are connected by a six kilometre return gravel road which leads into dense bush and past the largest known kauri in the Waitakere Ranges. You will also see the Huia Museum, the final resting place of the anchor from the HMS Orpheus, wrecked off the Manukau Harbour bar in 1868, in one of New Zealand’s worst maritime disasters. The museum also features a large display of photos which clearly illustrate the area’s earlier logging and farming operations. Opposite the museum is a 2.5 kilometre loop track running alongside the Karamatura Stream. Natural swimming holes and waterfalls are a highlight of this walk.
