Coming up ahead is the Rainforest Express, otherwise known as the Bush Tramway. This 2ft gauge line follows the water pipe from Jacobson Creek to the Upper Nihotupu Dam for about 5km’s through a number of tunnels. The working railway is also used for pipeline maintenance. If you plan to take the train at night, glow worm s light up the tunnel and bush. The Rainforest Express is operated by the local water authority and furnishes visitors with the history of Auckland’s water supply. The Rainforest Express is very popular and bookings are essential.
