Coming up on your left is the road to Karekare, a sleepy beachside hollow where horses roam in backyards beneath giant macrocarpa trees. Karekare is home to internationally acclaimed artist, Dean Buchanan, a handful of writers and other creative types. A stunning waterfall tumbles over rocks into a large, bush-fringed pool behind the beach, and a four-hour hike south leads to Whatipu, at the entrance to the Manukau Harbour.
