You are approaching the turnoff to Piha Beach, Anawata and Karekare. Piha Beach is a coastal settlement and one of the most popular resorts in the area. It has become a major day-trip destination for Aucklander’s, especially during summer. Lion Rock is the natural formation which divides North and South Piha beaches and is immediately visible as you drive down the road. Images of Lion Rock can also be seen on Auckland’s West Coast stamps and the Auckland phone book. Karekare is also a small coastal settlement and is famous for its black sand surf beach. The location was also the set for beach scenes of the film “The Piano”. Stop in for a relaxing drink and meal at the Elevation Café at 350 meters above se level, Elevation Café boasts views over Auckland City and the Hauraki Gulf.
