Shortly the road will descend sharply to Piha Beach offering brilliant views of the aptly named Lion Rock as it descends to this renowned beach. In the early days there was no road here – just a steep track, which became a watercourse in wet weather. The proper road down was a muddy, windy route that was often damaged by bullock teams pulling out logs. Relief workers upgraded it in 1932 when NZ was in the throes of the depression, but it remained a gravel track until it was sealed in sections between 1970 and 1983.
