You are approaching Waitakere Dam. The dam is set in the Waitakere Ranges and consists of three concrete and two earth dams. Upper Nihotopu, Upper Huia and Waitakere dams are all concrete and Lower Huia and Lower Nihotupo are earth dams. These dams were built between 1907 and 1971 and have been named after the streams that feed into their reservoirs. Each dam supplies 25 % of Auckland’s water supply. Visitors can also take part in a self-guided walk around the dam which takes about 1.5 hours to complete.
