You are now approaching Whatipu where the great Maori navigator Kupe landed in 925AD and performed ceremonies on Toka Tapu o Kupe rock, now known as the Nine Pin, to appease Tangaroa, the god of the sea. A rough, unmarked route leads to sea caves that were once used as shelter by Maori, and later as a ballroom for timber workers in the 1920s. There are another couple of notable buildings: Whatipu Lodge, built for a mill manager in 1867, and Liebergreen Cottage, a former mill-worker’s home, thought to date from the 1860s. A bracing walk along the beach leads to the Zion Hill Track and onwards to Piha.
