You are now approaching Hiona Saint Stephens Church. The church was built in 1864 by Carl Volkner, a missionary who was taken prisoner by the “Hau Hau” tribe and executed. Some claim that Volkner was a martyr but others believe he was a spy. If you would like to have a look inside the church, keys are available from the Opotiki Heritage and Agricultural Museum across the road. The museum is also a great stop and all of its contents have been collected locally and will give you some insight into the hardships of the past. Also, the Alan Rowe Floor in the new museum exhibit a number of agricultural displays.
