On your left is the Whakatane Shelter. There are a number of carved canoes here, known as “wakas.” The wakas are very ornate and are used for ceremonial purposes. The game fishing weigh station is next to the Shelter and adjacent to Muruwai Cave. Muriwai was the sister of Toroa, who was the captain of the ‘Mataatua’ canoe and her name is given to the cave where the sacred talisman from the ‘Mataatua’ was placed.
