If you look to your left / right now you will see Mount Maunganui, which is now officially known by its Maori name Mauao. Colloquially the mountain is simply known as The Mount. This extinct volcanic cone rises above the town and according to Maori legend, this hill was a slave to a mountain called Otanewainuku.
