Coming up is Pohaturoa Rock. Since 1927, this sacred rock has been a memorial to those who died in the First World War. The rock was also the site of traditional Maori ceremonies. Part of the rock forms an archway which was used as a place for tattooing and other rites of passage. From the top of the rock visitors will have a great view of the town and on a clear day itâ€™s possible to the plumes of steam on White Island.
