Coming up ahead is Puketapu Lookout and Papaka Redoubt. The Puketapu Lookout was once a Maori fortified village and now serves as a lookout over the town, river, offshore islands and the Rangitaiki Plains. The Papake Redoubt was also an ancient Maori fortification. Its also believed that an Armed Constabulary built a stronghold near the site to protect the town after it had been invaded by Te Kooti in the late 1860’s. The observatory is a short distance up the hill and please note it is not suitable for cars towing campervans or heavy loads to drive up to the observatory.
