You are now approaching Wiaotahi Beach. At the eastern end of the beach you will see two carved poles called “Te ara Ki Te Tairawhiti” meaning “The pathway to the sunrise.” The poles were designed by Graham Hayward and carved by Heke Collier who is said to be Opotiki’s master carver. These poles represent the arrival of the Maori people to Opotiki. The European soldier and the Maori “wahine” or woman symbolizes the unity of the races.
