You are approaching the Bridge of Remembrance. A competition was held to decide on the best design for the bridge. Wellington architectural firm Prouse and Gummer was chosen as the winner. Features on the bridge like the cross suggests that sacrifice is the basis of human character and the torches highlight the inscribed battle fronts. The lions symbolize the Empire and its victory while the rosemary and wreaths are in remembrance of those who fought in World War I. The Bridge of Remembrance was officially opened in 1924 and was dedicated to those who walked across the bridge when they left for battle.
