You are approaching Canterbury Museum and Botanic Gardens. This small museum was built in 1876 and has since collected more than 2 million items that tell the stories of early Moari and European settlement and even Antarctic exploration. The Botanic Gardens came about when an English Oak tree was planted in 1863. Today the gardens cover 30 hectares of land and features both exotic and indigenous plants. Walk around the numerous themed gardens and the Curator’s House. The house was once the original residence of the Curator of the Botanic Gardens but has since become a restaurant serving New Zealand faire with a Spanish influence.
