You are now approaching the Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings. This is one of the only purpose-built provincial government buildings still standing in New Zealand. The Canterbury is renowned for its historical importance and beauty. The provincial council buildings are within walking distance from the centre of Christchurch and alongside the Avon River – an important river in the development of Christchurch from the early Maori settlement. The buildings were designed by Benjamin Mountfort, Canterbury’s leading Gothic revival architect at the time. Mountfort used local stone and timber to build his masterpiece and the gem of Canterbury.
