Coming up is Centrewood, a 115-year-old French-inspired homestead that offers boutique-style accommodation in the midst of a 2000-acre sheep-and-Charolais-cattle stud. Johnny and Jo Sutherland are the fifth generation to have owned and lived in this magnificent homestead, built in 1890 by Johnny’s great great-grandfather, Alpheus Hayes, from Nova Scotia. Kilns were constructed near the building site to fire the 250,000 bricks required to make its triple-brick exterior and double-brick interior walls. At the same time the building was in progress, a lake was dug out by hand, and trees planted, including elm, ash, copper beech, and oak. Today five acres of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, maples, and magnolias flower in a profusion of colour, forming a majestic backdrop to the homestead itself.
