You are approaching Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna o Waiwhetu. Since it’s opening in 2003, the gallery boasts two floors of exhibition space, two educational areas and an auditorium. The name ‘Te Puna’ commemorates “Waipuna” - a well spring and ‘Waiwhetu’ - a tributary that runs into the Avon River. In English ‘Waiwhetu’ means ‘water in which stars are reflected.’ The Art Gallery is the largest institution on the South Island and the gallery’s collection totals over 5000 pieces.
