You are approaching Lyttelton Historic Museum. This two storey building was known as ‘The Mission’ and often accommodated docked sailors who elected to stay at the Mission House as opposed to hotels. In its days as the Mission House it contained a social hall for dances and concerts, a library, a billiard room and Missions quarters. However, since 1977 the building has been used as the Lyttelton Museum and the original chapel is still in tact at the museum. Displays inside the museum showcase the history of the area. Also note that the classic architecture of the building has been modernized.
