Coming up is Otaio, where in 1855 Jeanie Collier became the first woman in New Zealand to hold a pastoral licence. She was granted rights to occupy Crown waste lands stretching from the Otaio River in the north, to the Hook River in the south. However it wasn’t until 1893 that New Zealand became the first self-governing nation to grant the right to vote to all adult women. These days arguably the top three positions in the country – Prime Minister, Governor-General and Chief Justice – have all in the past been held by women.
