Coming up is the New Zealand Pioneer Aviator Memorial which commemorates Richard William Pearse. The memorial is a replica of the aircraft he used for his pioneer flight which took place on the 31st of March 1903. Pearse flew about 50 yards before crashing into a fence where the memorial now stands. This first flight took place only 9 months before the Wright brothers celebrated what they called the first powered flight. Pearse then admitted that his attempted flight was not controlled and couldn’t be maintained over a long distance.
