Coming up is the Robert Falcon Scott Statue. Christchurch was the New Zealand base for the British Antarctic expeditions between 1901 and 1910. Captain Scott and his crew were caught in bad weather on their way back from the South Pole and were unable to make it to the next “supplies base.” Sadly, the captain and his crew died of starvation. Lady Scott, a British sculptor and the Captain’s wife agreed to complete a sculpture of Robert Falcon Scott. The finished statue was positioned facing north, in the direction of Scott’s home. The names of his crew are inscribed on an extract of Scott’s last note before his death.
