You are now approaching Springfield, the most westerly township on the Central Canterbury Plains. Also known as “The Gateway to the Southern Alps,” skiers pass through the township on their way to ski fields in the nearby mountains. The Midland Railway Line houses the Information Centre. Stop in if you require any information about the town of surrounding area. Springfield is also the birthplace of Rewi Alley, a writer, educator and social reformer famous for his work with the Communist Party of China.
