Coming up is the turn-off which leads to Centrewood Park and the lookout point at the White Horse, seen from the township on the hills above Waimate. This landmark was erected by Norman Hayman in 1965, and provides magnificent views of the Waimate district and the Pacific Ocean. The huge beast, built of some 1220 concrete slabs and with a two-and-a-half-ton head, pays tribute to the Clydesdale Horse and the pivotal role it has played in the district. It’s just a short scramble down to the horse from the lookout, and once there, there’s the option of hiking the three-kilometre Waimate Walkway, which leads back down into the township itself.
