Coming up is the turn-off to Waimate one of the few places in the world where you can kiss a wallaby, kill a wallaby, and eat a wallaby – all on the same day. This rather unusual claim to fame is all thanks to a certain Captain Thomson, who in 1870 transported several Red Neck, Bennett’s wallabies from Tasmania to Christchurch. Two females and one male were subsequently purchased by Waimate’s first European settler, Michael Studholme, and liberated into the Hunter Hills, where they set about making themselves completely at home. Today the wallabies are spread over some 350,000 hectares of land and enjoy a good diet, including a feast of clover in the spring. However, much to the annoyance of farmers, they have also developed a taste for swede, so hunting them has become a local sport. Visitors can join in at Ngahere Game Ranch; dine out on wallaby pie at Waimate’s Savoy Tea Rooms, or cuddle orphaned joeys at EnkleDooVery Korna.
