Coming up is Waimate, an Edwardian township with a wealth of historical buildings from this era to see. There’s the Savoy Tearooms housed in the Savoy Building, dating from 1870, and thought to be the first brick building on the street, the old courthouse built in 1879 and now home to the Waimate Museum, and the Blue Stone House, built in the mid-1860s and the longest-occupied residence in the district. Pop into the Waimate information centre - which is located inside the old 1911 Post Office building, itself worth visiting for its incredible pressed steel ceilings – and pick up a self-guided walking map. It depicts many of the town’s highlights including St Patrick’s Catholic Church and the façade of the Arcadia Theatre.
