You are now approaching Avon Heathcote Estuary. Two rivers meet on this 800-hectare estuary, one of New Zealand’s most important estuaries that includes wetlands, mudflats, salt marshes, reed beds and sand dunes. The Estuary is dominated by the 450 year old Te Huingi Manu Wildlife Refuge. The Avon Heathcote Estuary is a must for birdwatchers, with over 100 bird species, as well as waders and ducks.
