Coming up is Hanging Rock Bridge and the Hanging Rock Maori rock art site, which dates back to the 16th Century. There are many other sites scattered around this region however Hanging Rock is notable because it features an intricate sketching of a Taniwha. The drawing is credited to the Waitaha, the first moa hunters, who spent three to four weeks in this area every year, hunting and fishing. The immediate area is also home to the only known long-tailed bat population to be found on the east coast of South Island.
