Coming up is the turn-off to Hook Beach, where you can stroll along the shoreline to Wainono Lagoon, a popular birdwatcher’s haunt, or fossick for quartz pebbles tumbled smooth as they journeyed from the high country to the sea. Beside the beach is a stone cairn, erected in memory of missionary Bishop Selwyn and the first South Island Maori census-recorder Edward Shortland who met here unexpectedly in 1844 and camped at this site.
