You are now approaching Lake Ellesmere. It is a broad and shallow lake directly to the west of Banks Peninsula, separated from the Pacific Ocean by a long narrow strip called Kaitorete Spit. The lake is the largest in the alluvial fan of the Canterbury Plains. The main river that feeds Lake Ellesmere is the Selwyn river.
