Coming up is the Thames School of Mines. In 1885 30 schools of mines were formed to provide practical instruction to gold miners working in the area. The Thames school was opened in 1886 and was the largest and one of the longest surviving. After the near exhaustion of the Thames goldfield, the school broadened its curriculum to include many other subjects but eventually closed its doors in 1954, except the mineralogical museum that remained open to the public. The Thames of Mines was eventually taken over by the Historic Places Trust in 1979.
