You are approaching Captain Cook’s Landing. This is where Captain James Cook arrived on the ship called Endeavour in October 1769. Legend has it that the local Maori’s thought that the Endevour was an enormous, beautiful bird. An obelisk and pedestal was erected in 1906 to mark the spot where Captain Cook landed and in 1966 the reserve surrounding the spot was declared a historic reserve. In 1990, the area became the first official National Historic Reserve in New Zealand because it marks the spot where the Maori’s and Europeans began to learn about each other
