Coming up ahead is Tairawhiti Museum. This museum and art gallery is known as one of the best and innovative regional museums in New Zealand. The museum houses the history of the region and visitors can experience the art, Cultural and heritage of the community. The Te Moana Marititem Museum also documents 1000 years of maritime myths, legends and stories of the Tairawhiti East Coast region. The Wyllie Cottage is located in front of the museum. This was the first European house and was constructed out of wood while the roof is made of Kauri shingles. The 133 year old house was built by John Forbes and James Ralston in 1872.
