Coming up is the Te-Poho-O-Rawiri Marae, one of the biggest Maori meeting houses in New Zealand. It was built by the Ngati Oneone, the Maori people who’s descendents where the first to meet Cook when he first landed in New Zealand. The interior of the building is covered in traditional carvings. One example is the ‘tekoteko’. This is a kneeling human figure with a raised right hand, symbolizing a challenge for anyone who enters the marae with harmful intentions. Over the years, guests at the marae have included Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Please note that photographs are not permissible inside the building.
