You are now approaching the Gisborne District. This is the first city in the world to see the sunrise. The Maori name for this area is ‘Te Tairawhiti’ which means ‘the coast that first sees the new sun each day.’ Kati beach is also near the city and is where the Maori waka, Horouta, first landed. It was also the first European landing place in New Zealand. Captain Cook first landed here in 1769 and only later in 1831 did Europeans settle here. Today, there are over 45 000 people living in this district and its known for its warm summers and mild winters.
