You are now approaching Matawhero Church. This is the oldest church in the region and was built in 1862 as a storehouse for Captain Read. Read was one of the first pioneers to the region and the building is constructed completely out of kauri wood. The building later became an Anglican church until it was bought by the Presbyterians in 1872. It was one of the only buildings that survived when Te Kooti, a Maori guerilla leader, invaded the area in 1868.
