Coming up on your left/right is the Wainui Beach Sperm Whale Grave. On the 18th of March 1970, 59 sperm whales were stranded on Wainui Beach. Attempts were made to save the whales but were unsuccessful and an enormous grave was dug in the sandhills and the carcasses were buried. Stop and have a look at the sign posts marking the spot along the road. Avid surfers will also enjoy surfing at the popular Wainui Beach. There are waves throughout the year and the best swell is off the southern reef called the Stock Route.
