You are now approaching Te Puia Springs and the turnoff to Waipiro Bay. Te Puia Springs is just north of Gisborne and is the first place in the world to greet the new day. The town has a dense Maori population and one of the best places in New Zealand to discover Maori heritage. There are a number of heritage trails within the Tairawhiti District. Te Puia also has a small, pretty lake that is the only active thermal on the East Coast.
