Along this stretch of road you will be able to see the points of ‘Young Nick’s Head’. It is the cape at the southern point of Poverty Bay that Nicholas Young first saw in 1769 while sailing on the ‘Endeavour’ with Captain James Cook. When Captain Cook thought that he was close to land he promised a gallon of rum to the man who discovered it by day and two gallons if he discovered it by night. He also promised that the land would be named after the person who discovered it first. Nicholas Young was the personal servant of the surgeon on board and was about 12 years old at the time, he was the first to spot land and the as promised, the land was named after him.
