You are now approaching Clive Square and Memorial Square. Clive Square was the venue for the first cricket and football matches in this area. Later, Dickens Street separated the square into Clive Square and Memorial Square. The Memorial Square was named in memory of the soldiers who fought in World War I. After the 1931 earthquake, these two squares became shopping and banking complexes for the town. While the Central Business District was rebuilding the retail shops and banks, this area was referred to as ‘Tin Town’.
