Coming up ahead is the entrance of the Napier Department of Conservation Information Centre. Adjacent to the center is the ‘Pania of the Reef Statue.’ In Maori mythology Pania of the Reef was an attractive maiden who lived in the sea. During the day she swam with the creatures in her reef and during the night she would go to a stream where she could rest. This 1.5m statue weighs 60kg’s and commemorates the legend and is likened to the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen. Also near the statue is the Tom Parker Fountain and the Floral Clock, both great examples of the town’s Art Deco influence. Tom Parker donated the money for the illuminated fountain to be built similar to one he saw in Britain.
