You are now approaching the National Tobacco Company Ltd. The building was built after the earthquake in 1931. A lot of the towns building were designed in the simple and striking Art Deco style architecture not only because it was fashionable but because they were safer in the event of another natural disaster. Louis Hay designed the building for Gerard Husheer and it has become known throughout town as “Napier’s most elaborate and detailed building.” Notice the rose features on either side of the door, the brass banisters, lamps and marble foyer.
