Coming up is Omahu and the turn off to Kaweka Forest Park and the Central Plateau townships of Taihape and Waiouru, which follows an historical route past the Mangawhare Homestead where passengers once waited with bated breath as rival coaches charged along the straights, battling it out to be the first on the scene. This region has been farmed since the 1860s, and the route was once one of the busiest pack trails in New Zealand. Back in the 1870s, when wool was a coveted commodity, vast inland sheep runs loaded long trains of packhorses for the journey to the Napier market. It was only when rumours of gold began to circulate that a more accessible wagon trail was forged towards the mountains, though promises of the Pioneer Gold Mine never amounted to more than mere words.
