Coming up is the village of Kuripapango, a legendary spot in the challenging sport of dog trials. It was here that the North Island competitions originated more than 90 years ago. The town was once home to a pair of hotels, one on each side of the Ngaruroro River. A bridge was built in 1899 linking the communities on both sides of the river, but with a maximum load-bearing capacity of 6.5 tons and advent of the motor vehicle, the structure could handle the weight of trucks but not their stock. This inconvenient issue was resolved by the building platforms – the remains of which you can see on each bank; here, stock could be off-loaded and held, then walked across the bridge to the other platform, to be reloaded. It wasn’t until 1961 that the current and more functional bridge, replaced this rather eccentric set-up.
