You are now approaching Lake Waiakaremoana situated in the Te Urewera National Park. This is North Island’s deepest and most attractive lakes. There are a number of native bird species here that aren’t found in many other parts of North Island. Lake Waikaremoana is a popular holiday destination and visitors enjoy fishing, hiking and bird watching. The Lake Waikaremoana Trail is a popular 3 to 4 day trail and one of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’. Visitors can either go on a self-guided or group walk. Lake Waikaremoana is Maori and means ‘sea of rippling waters’.
