You are now approaching the turnoff to Mahia Beach and Mahia Peninsula. Mahia is a Maori name that means ‘murmur.’ In the past the area was known as Te Mahia mai Tawhiti or “the murmuring of home.” The name refers to the constant echo of the sea. Mahaia Peninsula is an ecological island and the whole of Mahia is great for surfing, fishing and diving. Close to Mahia Beach is Black Beach, a surf beach famous for its right hand break. The natural surroundings, views and activities have made Mahia a favourite holiday destination amongst travelers.
