You are now travelling along the Mohaka River. When you’re crossing the Mohaka River, look upstream to see the impressive railway bridge. This bridge was built in 1937 and stands at 96 meters above the river level and is the highest rail viaduct in Australasia. “Mohaka” means ‘a place for dancing’ and is halfway between Napier and Taupo. The river is known for its adventure activities and visitors can hire a canoe or a kayak and make their way through deep gorges and Grade 2 and Grade 3 water. Fishing is also permitted on the river and is well known for trophy size trout catches.
