You are approaching the turnoff onto Te Mata Peak Road. From the summit you will be able to see great views of the Ruahine, Kaweka and Maungaharuru Ranges and Cape Kidnappers. On a clear day look out for the volcano, Ruapehu. The name ‘Te Mata’ is a unique story of Maori folklore. It was said that the people living in the fortified villages were under a serious threat of attack from the Waimarama tribes. One of the local woman suggested that the Waiamarama leader, Te Mata, should be seduced by a woman of the opposing tribe and so all thoughts of war would turn into peace and love. The plan was successful but some people didn’t believe Te Mata’s devotion so he had to prove himself by eating through the hills. Te Mata died trying to do so the remains of his efforts are now called The Gap and his body forms Te Mata Peak.
