You are now crossing the Wairoa Bridge, on your left / right is Portland Island Lighthouse and the start of the Wairoa Heritage Trail. The lighthouse was designed by John Blackett, a marine engineer, who built it from solid kauri wood. It was used between 1878 to the mid 1950’s on Portland Island and was moved to this site 1961. The Wairoa River is a popular spot for water-skiing, jet boating and rowing. Also note that the Heritage Trail starts on the Marine Parade.
